A Good Resume

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Originally, I thought that a resume consisted of personal information and work experience. But looking up ‘good resumes’ on Google and talking to professors and my father (who is the owner of a company) I found that employers are looking for so much more than just what work you have done in the past. They want to know everything! How have you helped you community? What did you accomplish in high school? In college? What sort activities are you interested in? What skills outside of academics have you picked up over the years? And the more outrageous or diverse your answers to these questions, the more likely you are to get hired for the job you are looking for.

This is why when I moved into a house with a few kids who were moving out for the first time, we created a Roommate Rules list. This list was composed of rules and chore schedules. What I found was that if something was on the list, people wouldn’t mind doing there fair share, but if it wasn’t on the list and you asked someone to take care of it, they would get upset. I think this is because it is annoying to drop what you are doing to clean up the mess you made for lunch, but if you know in advance you have to clean, it doesn’t seem as bad.
