Originally, I thought that a resume consisted of personal information and work experience. But looking up ‘good resumes’ on Google and talking to professors and my father (who is the owner of a company) I found that employers are looking for so much more than just what work you have done in the past. They want to know everything! How have you helped you community? What did you accomplish in high school? In college? What sort activities are you interested in? What skills outside of academics have you picked up over the years? And the more outrageous or diverse your answers to these questions, the more likely you are to get hired for the job you are looking for.

Getting a job you love, even harder. There are two possible ways to tackle your job search, as I see it, depending on your personal situation. First option: decide what you want to do. Do you want to work in retail, foods, manual labor, or something else? Then see what jobs are available in that specified area. Or, option two: apply for what is available. If you are flat broke, I’m sorry but you cannot afford (literally) to be picky. Take the first job that hires you. Then, after a while, you can add that job to your list of work experience and perhaps expand your background, bringing more knowledge than you had previously to your next job. Job Interviews Can VaryWednesday, May 27th, 2009Depending on the type of job you apply for, interviews can vary quite a bit. Once I worked in retail. The store was small and not the most professional looking, but I loved their cheap clothes and knew they were hiring. When I went in for my interview, the manager took me into the back because the office was a tiny box in the extreme back of the storage room. We went through his list of questions and finished the interview and I thought I could go, but then he says, “Wait here, I’ll get the assistant manager and do the second interview so you don’t have to come back later.” I was so surprised… this was my first job and I have never heard of such a thing as a second interview. But I made it through and got the job. |
